haut fond

The Haut-Fond Prince Lighthouse is located in the St. Lawrence River, 8 km (5 miles) from the coast of Tadoussac, below the Saguenay Fjord. The lighthouse was built in 1962 and has since been exposed to extremely severe freeze-thaw conditions. During the winter months, the salty environment and the impact of ice against the structure caused severe deterioration to the concrete.

In the summer of 1996, the Canadian Coast Guard called tenders to rehabilitate the concrete sections of the lighthouse. A special air entrained shotcrete mix (silica fume enhanced, accelerated, steel fiber reinforced) was specified as a repair material. Steel fibers were utilized to provide resistance to impact from the ice. The accelerator and silica fume prevented the shotcrete from being washed away by the rapidly moving tides. The contract was awarded to Les Spécialistes en Corrosion Zedco and completed on schedule in the Fall of 1996. The Canadian Coast Guard was very pleased with the quality of the work and the performance of the materials, especially when considering the difficult working conditions.
